The UTHSCSA Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Division of General Thoracic Surgery has partnered with St. Luke's Baptist hospital to provide highly coordinated lung cancer treatment. It is the first initiative in South Texas to offer a navigated program with one-call access to that your high-risk patients can be quickly referred to the appropriate level of treatment.
On May 4, 2014 Earl Tomlin underwent a single lung transplant at University Hospital — becoming the 500th lung transplant performed by UT Medicine San Antonio doctors over a storied history spanning almost three decades.

The American Board of Thoracic Surgery has announced that Dr. John Calhoon has now successfully completed his 10th year of service as a member of the Board of Directors (2003-2013) . He will be rotating off of the Board effective October 19th, 2013.
Dr. Nitin Das has been appointed the Director of Thoracic Surgery Research October 1, 2013. He will be responsible for clinical and basic science research activities and helps lead the STS Clinical Outcomes Research effort within the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery. He chairs a weekly research forum at the main offices at 7703 Floyd Curl Dr. Rm 211L on Wednesdays @ 11:30am.
