John H. Calhoon, MD

President’s Council Chair for Excellence in Surgery
Dr. Calhoon obtained his medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas in 1981. He is Board Certified in Surgery, Thoracic Surgery, and Congenital Cardiac Surgery. He joined the group in 1989 and currently serves as the Chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UT Health San Antonio. His clinical interests include congenital cardiac surgery, thoracic transplantation, and complex adult cardiac surgery.

Edward Y. Sako, MD, PhD
Professor and Chief, Adult Cardiac Surgery
Dr. Sako obtained his medical degree from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in 1982. He completed general surgery residency and cardiothoracic surgery training at the University of Minnesota. His interests include valve repair and replacement, coronary artery bypass surgery, and cardiac surgical education.
Scott B. Johnson, MD
Professor and Chief, Thoracic Surgery
Dr. Johnson received his medical degree in 1987 from the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency and cardiothoracic surgery training at the University of Colorado. His interests include thoracic oncology and minimally invasive thoracic surgery.
S. Adil Husain, MD
Professor and Chief, Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery
Dr. Husain obtained his medical degree from the University of North Dakota. He completed his general surgery residency at Yale and pediatric cardiothoracic surgery training at Emory University. His interests focus on congenital heart disease and pediatric heart surgery.

Clinton E. Baisden, MD
Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery
Dr. Baisden obtained his medical degree at The University of Oklahoma Medical School in 1975. He completed his cardiothoracic surgery training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His areas of expertise include adult cardiac surgery and thoracic trauma.
A. J. Carpenter, MD, PhD
Associate Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery
Dr. Carpenter earned her PhD in Physiology from Penn State University in 1981 and her MD from George Washington University in 1989. She completed residency training at Stanford University and fellowships at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Her focus is on clinical and translational research in thoracic surgery.
Alfonso Chiscano, MD
Clinical Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery
Dr. Chiscano studied in Tenerife and Madrid before completing his medical degree at the University of Barcelona. He completed cardiothoracic surgery training at UT Health San Antonio and has special interests in cardiac transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.
Daniel T. DeArmond, MD
Assistant Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery
Dr. DeArmond completed general surgery residency at UT Health San Antonio and cardiothoracic training at Emory University. He has an interest in adult cardiac surgery, including complex valve and aortic procedures.
Timothy T. Hamilton, MD
Assistant Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery
Dr. Hamilton earned his medical degree at the University of Nevada in 1997 and completed residencies in Dallas and UT Southwestern. His clinical interests include minimally invasive cardiac surgery and aortic procedures.
Lauren C. Kane, MD
Associate Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery
Dr. Kane holds a joint appointment in Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Children’s Heart Network. She completed fellowships at Emory and USC Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Her focus is on congenital heart disease and pediatric surgery.
Jay D. Pal, MD, PhD
Associate Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery
Dr. Pal received his MD/PhD from the Chicago Medical School, trained in general surgery at UCSF East Bay, and in cardiothoracic surgery at Duke University. His interests include advanced heart failure, mechanical circulatory support, and cardiac transplantation.
Chad N. Stasik, MD
Assistant Professor, Cardiothoracic Surgery
Dr. Stasik trained at the University of Florida in General Surgery and completed fellowship training in cardiothoracic surgery at UT Health San Antonio. His interests include adult cardiac surgery with emphasis on minimally invasive and endovascular techniques.
