Welcome to Cardiothoracic Surgery rotation for surgical interns. We hope that you find your month with us to be educational and professionally fulfilling. The Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery is divided into three Divisions: Adult Cardiac Surgery, General Thoracic Surgery, and Congenital Cardiac Surgery. Each division includes faculty who have specific interests and expertise in their chosen fields. Our team also includes Thoracic Surgery residents and Acute Care Nurse Practitioners. We provide care to a multitude of patients with a variety of medical conditions at our practice sites.
The goals and objectives of this rotation is to:
- Learn critical care management of patients with cardiopulmonary disease
- Ventilator management
- Vasoactive infusions
- Hemodynamic monitoring
- Learn the preoperative evaluation of patients referred for cardiac or thoracic surgery
- Gain exposure and understanding of common cardiothoracic surgical procedures
Our expectations are:
- Provide compassionate and appropriate care to patients undergoing cardiothoracic procedures
- Learn the provided rotation objectives
- Participate in a self-study program to learn common cardiothoracic procedures and perioperative care
- Participate in the OR with appropriate preparation
- Teach the medical students
- Work as a member of the cardiothoracic team
